What if That IS Jesus?!
While we were doing some street evangelism we had an encounter with this fellow Mel, who dresses up like Jesus and walks around town. (You can read his story here & here.) Now, for the record he doesn't actually believe that he IS Jesus although after speaking with him he does in fact teach that Jesus or the Holy Spirit incarnate as random people on the street, like an old lady or a homeless man.
His contention with us was that we should treat everyone we meet as if they are Jesus because they might actually be! This was his application of Matthew 25:35-40. Now, he was a nice guy even though he instructed us that we are devils and driving folks away from God and we don't know much of anything about Him. I tried to demonstrate that we are of God according to the bible as we are preaching that Jesus is the Lord and came in the flesh (1 Cor.12:3, 1 Jn.4:1-3). The contention that emerged in the discussion was subjective experience has ascendancy over the objective truth of scripture; i.e. not bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor.10:5). As is always the case, once we exalt experience over scripture we err. When people denigrate the bible and relegate it to a book of innumerable equally valid interpretations or as putty to simply validate their subjective feelings or experiences, then they defy God where the scripture states "thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name" (Psa.138:2)
We tried to instruct Mel's opposing of himself by showing where Paul said Jesus is no longer known in the flesh (2 Cor.5:16). Peter as well said we do not see him (1 Pet.1:8) Jesus said "I go to my Father, and ye see me no more" (Jn.16:10, 16); presumably this would mean also not 'in another form' (Mk.16:12, Lk.24:16, Jn.20:15). Concerning Christ in his resurrected 'flesh and bone' body (Lk.24:39), Paul said "last of all he was seen of me" (1 Cor.15:8). But I did mention to Mel that when Jesus says deceivers in the last days will claim "Lo, here is Christ, or there" (Mt.24:23) that Jesus himself- clearly and not between the lines- said about this... "as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." (v27) Appearing the second time "in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory" (Mt.24:30, 26:64, Mk.14:62) and not on a park bench. But again, Mel would gainsay us that we are not understanding the bible because we don't have that subjective enlightenment, telling us that the verses mean something OTHER than what they clearly state. The final truth for Mel was not objective revelation (the written text) but his personal subjective experience which could not be tested by anyone. Mel was his own final authority as we pointed out to him. We informed him that we do indeed have a personal subjective relationship with the Lord by his indwelling Spirit- but Mel presumed that his relationship with Jesus cancelled ours out.
Also, after rereading the Lazarus account in John 11, I think Mel's "revelation" about why Jesus wept is incorrect because it nowhere states that Jesus told the Jews that he intended on raising Lazarus that day. Even when he told his disciples they didn't appear to get it (Jn.11:11-16, 24). Yet this was how Mel tested us whether we were false prophets- how we interpreted Jesus weeping. Clearly not the apostle John's method. But he would not be corrected with scripture because 'God spoke to him when he was 5 years old' and this takes precedent over the book of the LORD.
The entire encounter isn't on the video, but Mel does not attend church anywhere (i.e. forsakes the assembly- Heb.10:25) because they are all full of wicked people- like the gates of hell have apparently prevailed against the church (Mt.16:18). He couldn't articulate to us what the gospel is; and some Hispanic fellows who joined the conversation called his bluff when he couldn't quote Jn.3:16 and 1:1 correctly. And after falsely claiming everyone was a son of God, Mel was corrected with Jn.1:12.
We ended by flipping the script on Mel by telling him that he needed to treat me as if I were Jesus and if he did that he could be instructed in the bible.
Mel, as you see at the end of the video, gets a lot of personal attention walking around in his costume. Perhaps this is his strongest motive, "standing... in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward." (Mt.6:5) Pray for him.
